Patricia Polacco

I just found a new favorite children's book author and illustrator: Patricia Polacco. I checked out two of her books from the library last week, and we just read them for the first time tonight. They both got thumbs up from the boys, and yours truly. The first one we read tonight is Thunder Cake, complete with a yummy recipe, which the boys begged me to write down. The second one is Chicken Sunday, which made me cry. That really freaked them out. It was a good cry, the kind you do when you see someone do something really nice. I looked up the author online and found out that she started publishing when she was 41, so that gave me some hope! I also found out that she was born in Michigan, and after a 30 plus year hiatus, lives here again. Check her out--she seems to be quite prolific.

I love her book The Keeping Quilt--another one to make the mommy cry. But she has one about a doll that comes alive that is a little too creepy. I'm always happy when you post.

I always enjoy hearing your book recommendations. We will have to check out these books.

After reading your blog I was at our elementary school used book sale and came across a hard copy of ThunderCake for $1. I bought it and love it! Thanks for the recommendation. (I too love the Keeping Quilt)

We finally read Thunder Cake last night. It was really good and my kids don't want to wait for a thunder storm to try out the recipe for "Thunder Cake". We'll let you know how it tastes (or we'll bring you some)!

Yes! I love her. I used to always use her when teaching fifth grade cause I taught social studies through literature. Pink and Say is one of my favorite ones. We miss Michigan, even the cold!
